Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Two peer-reviewed research articles have been published in open-access international journals on the English literacy development of Japanese-English bilingual children attending English weekend schools in Japan. The results based on a standardized writing assessment tool showed that the children achieved a high level of English literacy from regular attendance and enjoyment of weekend school, along with parental support and access to English reading materials. This level was maintained during COVID-19 even when their weekend school lessons were taught online. Children with very high writing scores read frequently in English and enjoyed reading independently and voluntarily. Thus recreational reading was found to be important for developing a high level of home language literacy.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Most data have been collected. Only a few remaining children will have their final writing assessment FY2024. After these children have been assessed, we will proceed to analyze their longitudinal performance and write a final paper based on the results.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

We will complete the writing assessment of the children FY2024. We will also present the results at an international conference and write up the results for publication in an international peer-reviewed journal.

Causes of Carryover

The funds will be used to present the research findings at an international conference in August 2024.
