Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this study, we conducted an evolutionary rescue research of the ground beetle Synuchus cycloderus using specimens collected from different regions of Japan from 2004 to 2021. First, we identified (1) latitudinal gradients as large-scale evolutionary patterns of traits, (2) temporal dynamics of traits over 18 years, and (3) disturbance responses of traits. In particular, with respect to the temporal dynamics of traits, we found that body size varied consistently across regions, and that the first half of the 18-year period was characterized by a progressive reduction in size, while the second half was characterized by a progressive increase in size, all of which are novel phenomena. A relationship with population size was also suggested. Further genomic analysis was performed to investigate DNA extraction from samples, library adaptation, target enrichment, and reference genome construction.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
