Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study has investigated the relationship between argument structure (lexical information about syntactic elements) and the lexical category form through observations of German infinitive nominalization (IN), which transforms infinitive verbs into nouns, e.g. befragen 'to interview' into das Befragen 'the observing.' Based on the patterns of interpretation of prenominal genitives and INs of causative/inchoative alternating verbs, the following two points were proposed: [1] INs share the same argument structure as base verbs; [2] the realization of the argument structure of INs uses an empty element which is traditionally assumed to be the subject of the verbal infinitive.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
