| Summary of the Research Project |
過去に起こった地球環境の大きな転換点（地質境界）における海底下生命圏の構造及び分布変化を明らかにし、太古の生物環境、生物進化の解明に迫る研究である。古環境研究者と微生物研究者が協働して海底堆積物試料の地質境界の認定と微生物群集の構造変化の解析を行い、地球環境の転換点が海底下微生物群集を規定しているという仮説検証に取り組む。

| Scientific Significance and Expected Research Achievements |
海底下での微生物学研究では、堆積物試料の全量を使った解析が慣例化している。そのため古環境情報の取得ができず、地質学的境界を利用した微生物学研究はほとんど実施されていない。同一試料から地質境界の特定と微生物群集の分析を行えるプロトコルの確立は、地球環境変化に対する生命活動の適応を解明する端緒となり、古環境学と微生物学を融合した新しい研究領域の創出につながると期待できる。
