Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of the present study is to analyze the socio-political meaning of donation through a critical reading of Books 13 and 14 of the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata (BC 2C~AD4C). I have demonstrated that the original intention of the discussions found in Book 14 lies in showing priests' superiority over kings, and in promoting the ideology that kings should donate their wealth to priests to maintain the religious hierarchy in which kings rule their subjects under supervision of priests. Book 14 further promotes donation to kings as a practice of self-control over their greed.
Book 13 has been understood as a continuation of the discussions found in its preceding Book 12 in previous studies, but I have demonstrated that discussions found in Book 13 echo with those on the superiority of priests over kings and donation as self-control in Book 14.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の学術的意義は、先行研究では雑多な諸説の寄せ集めであると理解されてきた『マハーバーラタ』第13, 14巻について、王族が社会の実質的支配は行うものの、バラモンが宗教的権威を独占するという概念、そしてバラモンと王族との関係を媒介するものとしての布施という概念が通底していることを示したこと、そして第13巻と第14巻の関連性を明らかにしたことにある。また本研究の社会的意義は、近年ゲームやアニメなどで『マハーバーラタ』やインド神話が注目されつつあるものの、信頼できる書籍や論文等が不足している現状において、『マハーバーラタ』に関する文献学的研究の最前線の研究水準を示した点にある。
