Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study aims to explore the relationship between the causes of changes in income and changes in consumption expenditures among rural farm households in developing countries, and to examine the existence of sources of income that have a relatively greater impact on expenditures on goods that contribute to improved nutritional status. Household surveys were conducted in Madagascar, where malnutrition is one of the most serious problems in the world. The results of the analysis of changes in income and consumption of about 550 households showed that off-farm income, excluding agricultural wages, and income from the sale of rice are positively associated with consumption expenditures on meat and fish, which are sources of nutrients that are particularly lacking in the study area, while income from the sale of crops other than rice did not show the significant association. These results suggest that the impact of income on consumption expenditure differs depending on the source.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
