大規模降水遮断実験による熱帯林の一斉開花現象のメカニズム解明

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

一斉開花を人工的に引き起こす操作実験を行う予定で準備したが、自然条件での開花が起こり、操作実験を行うことができなかった。そのため、自然条件による一斉開花プロセスを観測し、以下のように操作実験との比較のためのデータを収集した。
1993年から継続している開花調査を継続して行った。新たに得られたデータの予備解析の結果、2013年の開花の直前にも乾燥した状態があったことが確認できた。また、フタバガキ科樹種の種子生産の豊凶現象には、炭水化物ではなく、幹へのリンの蓄積が重要である可能性が示唆された。一方、開花結実中の昆虫個体群動態が明らかとなった。
これまでの開花・結実フェノロジーデータを解析したところ、一斉開花への参加頻度は樹種によって異なることが分かった。そこで、一斉開花への参加頻度と樹木の吸水深度との関連性を調べるため、連続的サンプリングによる土壌水と道管水の酸素安定同位体比を分析した結果、より浅い吸水源に依存している樹種ほど一斉開花への参加頻度が高い可能性が示唆された。さらに、確率過程生態水文モデルの援用により開発した“樹木枯死指標”のコンビネーションを利用して、ボルネオ熱帯雨林の乾燥ストレス枯死が将来予測された降水変化によってどのように変えられるのかを調べた結果、エルニーニョに対応して突発的な強い乾燥が起こること、その強い乾燥は１～３月に起きること、そして、降水の季節性がもっとはっきりしてくることが明らかとなった。
