| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The Tertiary Education for Sustainable Development Initiative was established in 2011 to develop a model approach for tertiary-level education for sustainable development (ESD) that can be applied internationally as well as at Japanese universities. Research achievements from April 2013 to December 2014 include:
・Extensive semi-structured interviews with students who participated in the "Building a Sustainable Future: Principles and Challenges" model ESD course piloted by project members at Hue University and Kyoto University in AY 2013. Conducted one year after the Hue and Kyoto pilots from March 2-6 2014 and 6 June-20 August 2014 respectively, the interviews were the final step in an unique evaluative framework, designed to gauge the effectiveness of the model approach in enhancing students' ecoliteracy and fostering pro-environmental and pro-sustainable behaviours.
・A six month collaborative qualitative research project with two social research students interns from Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia, to analyse data collected during and one year after the Hue and Kyoto pilots. This data analysis will be presented in a chapter co-authored by three project members to appear in a forthcoming academic monograph published by Earthscan Routledge, UK (title: "Education for sustainability in Japan: Fostering resilient communities after the triple disaster"). This volume is co-edited by two project buntansha and includes chapters authored by six project members, as well as contributions from Tertiary ESD Initiative collaborators Japan-wide.
