Research Abstract

希土類元素は通常3価だが、Ceは4価、Sm, Eu, Tm, Ybは2価のものが存在する。物質中では両者はしばしば混在し、温度や圧力によって価数相転移を示す物質もある。YbInCu4は構造不変のままTV~40 KでYb価数z=3 (高温相) から、z=2.9 (低温相) に1次相転移する。系を特徴付ける近藤温度は高温相でTK~25 K、低温相でTK~400 Kであり、Yb 4f状態は高温側で局在的、低温側で遍歴的である。本研究では、Inを他の元素で置換したYbXCu4単結晶を育成し、光電子分光実験により電子状態を明らかにし、それらの比較からYbInCu4の示す価数相転移の機構を構築することを目的とした。
Inを周期表の両隣の元素であるCd、Snで置換したYbCdCu4、YbSnCu4の単結晶育成に成功し、硬X線(hn=6 keV)光電子分光実験から、YbInCu4でCuサイト上の伝導電子数が最も多く、Cuサイトから他のサイト(ここではYb)に電荷が移動しやすくなっていることが価数相転移と関連していることが分かった。一方、最近合成された新規近藤格子系YbNi3X9 (X=Al, Ga)は、X=AlはTK~3 K、X=GaはTK~600 Kであり、前者がYbInCu4の高温相、後者が低温相に対応する。この系について同様な実験を実施し、光電子スペクトルに類似の変化を見いだした。比較により、伝導電子がYbサイトに移動することで価数相転移が起こり、伝導電子状態密度(DOS)中のフェルミ準位(EF)が移動し、EF上のDOSが増えたために低温相で近藤温度が上昇すると考えられる。このモデルを確かめるために、YbNiX3 (X=Si, Ge)に対して測定を行った。X=SiがYbInCu4の高温相、X=Geが低温相に対応し、全く同様の振る舞いが観測され、モデルを指示する結果が得られた。
