Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the FY 2022, we completed most of the tasks planned at the end of 2021 financial year. Our activities and achievements are as followed: 1) We successfully completed the data gathering with international students. We managed to increase the range of student profiles as well as the number. In total, we collected interviews with 145 students in two countries--123 students in Japan and 122 in Germany. These students came from 41 different countries, with the most being Chinese and Vietnamese. We also have a decent balance of gender: 147 of them identified as female and 138 identified as male. The interviews have been transcribed and organized into excel sheet. We started analyzing the qualitative data using MaxQDA. 2) We carried out some interviews with other stakeholders in international education, such as international office staff. 3) We applied for a grant to host an international symposium on international student mobility and received the funding. 4) Due to the number of qualitative interviews with students, we considered not to conduct an independent student survey due to the limit of resources. Instead, for the purpose of analyzing patterns of trajectories and determinants of trajectories, we could use existing JASSO survey data. We contacted JASSO and received the 2021 dataset on international students in Japan.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Because of the lasting COVID influence, we were not able to conduct the interviews with DAAD in Germany. We also delayed the interviews with Japanese language academies in Japan as well as in Vietnam.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In 2023, our main goals are to collect more stakeholder interview data, to analyze the qualitative interview data as well as the JASSO student survey data, and to come up with research outputs to be presented at the international symposium. The other focus is the organization of the symposium, aiming to generate international journal publications.
