Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究計画の最終年度となる本年度は、これまでに得られた観測・研究成果のとりまとめを行い、得られた成果の一部は、Polar Science誌の特集号に投稿し、受理されている（出版は平成29年7月予定）。
国際的には、Southern Ocean Observing System（SOOS）の下におかれた、インド洋区WG（SOOS Working Group on southern Ocean Indian Sector）の会合を、平成29年8月に神奈川県葉山町において開催することを決定し、準備を進めている。なお、本集会の共同議長は、本研究代表者と豪南極局のAndrew Constable氏が務めることになった。本研究課題について情報発信を行い、国際センティネル本格観測に向け、我が国の主導的立場を示す予定である。
また、これまで本研究で製作してきた漂流ブイに関して、耐氷性能を向上させる改造を行い、南極観測船「しらせ」から海氷域内に放流し、海氷が融解する期間の沈降粒子を補足する計画であった。しかしながら、今シーズンは例年になく海氷の融解が早く、「しらせ」での投入予定点は、開放水面となっていた。従って、耐氷性能を確認することはできなかったが、回収された漂流ブイに取り付けられたクロロフィルセンサー等のデータから、植物プランクトン量の時間変化を捉えることが出来た。
今後の研究の展開に関して、関係者と会合を持ち、本研究で分かってきた流れ・中規模渦とプランクトンの輸送過程研究、及び海氷融解と食物連鎖の研究をさらに発展させる必要がある事で意見が一致した。そこで、平成29年度科学研究費補助金基盤研究（Ａ）（海外学術調査）「南大洋センティネル計画－日豪共同によるインド洋区生態系のベンチマーク２０２０－」（研究代表者・小達）を申請し、国際センティネル本格観測に備えることとした。
