Outline of Annual Research Achievements

当該研究は、これまで不可能であった重い電子の人工制御により、自然界には存在しない2次元重い電子系物質を人工創製し、新奇な電子状態やエキゾチックな超伝導状態の創出と解明、更には、関連する重い電子系物質や鉄系超伝導体などの非従来型超伝導における電子状態、超伝導状態の包括的な解明を目的とするものである.

① 本プロジェクトでは、希土類化合物に特化した独自の分子線エピタキシー(MBE)装置と、3He冷凍機、及び11 Tまでの強磁場印加が可能な走査トンネル顕微鏡(STM)装置を融合したMBE-STM一体システムの開発を行ってきた.本年度の研究では、これを用いて重い電子系化合物CeCoIn5のエピタキシャル薄膜において世界初のSTM観測を行ない、近藤混成ギャップと超伝導ギャップの明瞭な観測を行った.更に、MBE法の特徴を活かしてCeCoIn5に微量なLa元素を不純物として人工的に導入し、制御された不純物周りでの近藤ホールの観測を行った.

② 現有のMBE装置を用いて、様々な人工超格子の作製に取り組んだ。特に、層状重い電子系化合物であるCe115系に関して、重い電子系超伝導体と通常金属の積層構造(CeCoIn5/YbCoIn5)、重い電子系反強磁性体と通常金属の積層構造(CeRhIn5/YbRhIn5)、重い電子系超伝導体のトリコロール格子(YbRhIn5/CeCoIn5/YbCoIn5)、更には重い電子系超伝導体と重い電子系反強磁性体のハイブリッド超格子(CeCoIn5/ CeRhIn5)の作製を行い、各々の電子状態および超伝導特性について研究を行った.これに加えて、核磁気共鳴実験グループやTHz応答研究グループとの共同研究により、人工超格子における異常な電子状態の研究に取り組んだ.

Reason

本プロジェクトでは、当初の研究目標を予定通り達成しており、個々の課題について掲げた研究目標に関して着実に研究成果を得ている.これに加えて本プロジェクトでは、当初の研究目的を超える予期せぬ研究の進展を複数得ており、このことから、本プロジェクトでは当初の計画以上に進展していると考える.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

これまでの人工超格子、及びMBE-STM装置を用いた研究について、当初掲げた研究最終目標を達成するとともに、より大きな研究展開を目指す.

重い電子系化合物はスピン軌道相互作用が強く、局所的な空間反転対称性の破れにより生じるラシュバ分裂によって、全体の電子状態は大きな変化を受ける.このような系は、強相関電子系におけるトポロジカル励起を実現する上で理想的な系であることが理論的に指摘されており、今後、トポロジカルな電子状態、超伝導状態の研究に発展させたい.また最近成功した、重い電子系超伝導体の上下を異なる物質で挟んだいわゆるトリコロール超格子の研究をさらに継続して発展させる.この超格子では空間反転対称性をマクロに破り、またその大きさも人工的に制御できる.
また、同じく最近作製に成功した重い電子系超伝導体CeCoIn5と重い電子系反強磁性金属CeRhIn5を積層させたハイブリッド超格子の研究をより発展させたい.この系では各層ごとにd波超伝導と反強磁性が交互に共存することがわかってきた.この系に圧力をかけることにより反強磁性状態を量子臨界状態に持って行くことが可能である.この場合、非従来型超伝導と量子臨界層が交互に共存することになり、これまで実現されたことのない新しい量子臨界状態をつくり出すことが期待される.

MBE法により作製した重い電子系化合物に対するトンネル分光測定で特に今後考えているのが、従来金属YbCoIn5の上に原子層の厚みしかもたない重い電子系超伝導体CeCoIn5を成長させた2次元近藤格子の研究である.強相関のd波2次元超伝導体でスピン軌道相互作用が強い系はこれまでに前例がなく、この系で予想される2次元超伝導では、大きな超伝導揺らぎや擬ギャップなど、銅酸化物や冷却原子気体で長年議論されてきた状態の解明、更にはトポロジカル超伝導状態などの実現へとつながると期待できる.
