Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Both the Reader plugin for Moodle and the browser-based MReader.com site have made great strides during 2014. The Reader plugin was used by 30 schools and approximately 15,000 students. The MReader site, on the other hand was used by approximately 60,000 students in 35 countries. Numerous improvements were made in the MReader system including automatic weekly notifications for teachers and students, and the ability to post one's progress to Facebook. Research activities included a comparison of the student reports from "graded readers" vs "youth readers" as well as a comparison of the results in schools that used the "level restriction function" vs those schools that allowed students to read whatever they wanted regardless of the difficulty.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Due to the presentations and publications of the research members, as well as numerous presentations by 'satisfied users', the project is growing rapidly in the number of users, and the number of quizzes available on the system. As of the end of March, 2015 about 4500 quizzes are now available student use.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Some aspects of the project have not yet been completed. We have yet to construct a system so that school administrators can extract the book feedback that their students have input after taking quizzes.
Furthermore, we hope to be able to measure how much Extensive Reading contributes to improving the students' predictive ability while reading.
|
Causes of Carryover |
There are still some 'rough edges' that need to be smoothed. In the following (final) year of the project we intend to add a password reminder function, an "Interim goals" function (to encourage students to read evenly during the term) and a function to display to each school the results of their students post-quiz comments. These are aspects that are required in order to allow the software to be used widely without the need for central support (since the software is free for schools to use).
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
Some funds will be spent on developing the functions mentioned above, but the bulk of the grant funds will be used for participation in conferences where the grant recipients will conduct presentations and workshops on how MReader can be effectively implemented. Such presentations have been the major source of growth of the project, which has now reached 350 schools, in 35 countries and 100,000 student users.
