Outline of Final Research Achievements

Micro-refugia located beyond a continuous species-range, are important for sources of plant migration triggered by the cyclic climatic change in the Quaternary, and by the recent global warming. As an example of micro-refugia, this study examined the relict distribution of cool temperate, deciduous and coniferous tree species in the warm temperate evergreen forest region. Literatures and specimens records are surveyed and several target areas are explored, to clarify the ecological and geographical conditions that enable the relict distribution. Pollen analytical study was also done to reveal the vegetation history as a background of relict distribution.
