価数と軌道の揺らぎによる新奇量子状態の解明

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

従来のスピン自由度に注目した研究とは異なり、電子の持つスピン以外の自由度、特に、価数(電荷)、および、軌道という二つの自由度の揺らぎによる、強相関電子系の新奇な量子状態の解明を目指して、以下の研究を行ってきました。

まず、我々の開発した価数揺動系超伝導体beta-YbAlB4に注目し、その超純良単結晶を育成し、静水圧力下での電気抵抗の精密測定を行いました。その結果、常圧で見つかった量子臨界現象が圧力下で強靭に存在すること、さらに、0.4 GPaを超えるとフェルミ液体相が現れることが分かりました。さらに、圧力を増加させると2.5 GPa以上で反強磁性秩序が弱い一次転移を経て現れることが確認されました。また、電気抵抗の振る舞いは、幅広い領域において、従来の金属とは異なるT-linearの振る舞いをすることを確認しました。以上のことから、常圧での量子臨界性は、反強磁性量子相転移から大きく離れており、それゆえ、その起源は反強磁性スピン揺らぎによるものでないことが決定的になりました。また、その量子臨界性は一つの新しい量子相を作る質的に新しいものであることも明らかになってきました。

次に、軌道ゆらぎによる新しい量子臨界現象の探索の結果、我々が開発した多極子重い電子超伝導体PrV2Al20において、重い電子超伝導が現れる四極子秩序相近傍において、低温比熱の詳細な研究を行った結果、多極子秩序が2段転移を経て現れることを見出しました。さらに、比熱は最低温付近でべき乗則に従うことを明らかにしました。このことは、この系に特徴的な多極子と伝導電子の強い混成効果の結果として、多極子秩序のゴールドストーンモードが存在していることを強く示唆します。多極子秩序のゴールドストーンモードの存在は理論的に議論されていますが、実験的には見つかっておらず、この系における今後の研究が期待されます。

Reason

金属電子系における量子臨界相の可能性は、これまで乱れによる効果が排除できず、ほとんど議論されることはなかった。YbAlB4における研究においては、その新しい量子臨界相の可能性が、超純良単結晶を用いた圧力下での高精度な電気抵抗測定により、初めて明らかになってきた。

さらに、PrV2Al20においては、これまでMn酸化物等でその可能性が議論をされてきた軌道秩序によるゴールドストーンモードの存在が、初めて実験的に明らかになってきた。この系は、軌道による量子臨界現象の研究対象として理想的な系であり、今後の研究が期待される。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

まず、YbAlB4において見出した、新しい量子臨界現象について、価数揺らぎの可能性を追究する。そのためには、alpha-YbAlB4においてAlサイトへの置換効果等により、価数の量子臨界点が存在する可能性を検討し、それをbeta-YbAlB4における常圧での量子臨界現象と比較することで、これらの系における価数の量子臨界現象の可能性を見極める。次にPrV2Al20における多極子秩序の多段転移については磁場下での比熱測定を行い、多極子による量子臨界現象、八極子秩序の可能性、orbitonの可能性を多角的に追及する。最後に、Ba3CuSb2O9に注目し、単結晶試料を用いた多角的な研究により、新しいスピン・軌道液体の性質を解明する。
