Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The goal of this research has been to develop the concept of ecologically appropriate communicative language teaching (CLT) for novice English teachers. To do this, I conducted 18 months of ethnographic fieldwork on three novice English teachers amassing 39 interview transcripts and 50 recorded and transcribed class observations. The past year has been spent on developing the methodology for elucidating the theory based on this data. The methodology I developed uses critical incidents (CIs)as a means of understanding the participants' experiences conducting CLT. CIs in this study were unexpected moments experienced by the participants when trying to enact CLT principles or experienced by the researcher doing mentoring the teachers. The methodology details a way to segment and code the data so that the criteria for selecting events to serve as CIs is valid. It also provides ways to analyze CIs. Ways of using two qualitative data analysis programs, NVivo and Transana, to facilitate this methodology were also proposed. I published one article in the journal, "Teaching and Teacher Education," about how the methodology developed in this research can be utilized to elucidate the emergent teaching practice of novice teachers. I also presented about it at the Japan Society of English Education. In June, 2017, one more article will be published for the Doing Research in Applied Linguistics Conference in Thailand.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The research has been extended by one year. The major achievement so far has been to develop a qualitative research method for elucidating the emergent practice of novice teachers. This was an unexpected achievement of this research as the original goal was to only elucidate a theory of ecologically appropriate communicative language teaching for novice English teachers in Japan.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Now that my publishing work on the methodology is finished, this year, I will devote my time to the primary goal of elucidating a theory of ecologically appropriate communicative language teaching (CLT) for novice teachers. I have two speaking engagements planned, and I have also written 23 critical incidents encapsulating the novice English teacher with CLT. These critical incidents will be used to generate a theory and will be published.
|
Causes of Carryover |
This research has had an unexpected achievement, the development of a new qualitative research methodology. Now that the work on publishing about this new research methodology is done, I will focus on completing the original goal of elucidating an ecologically appropriate method of communicative language teaching for novice English teachers. The results have been reached, but now I must publish and disseminate them.
|
Expenditure Plan for Carryover Budget |
The remaining funds will be used for attending conferences and publishing the results of the research. The original goal of this research proposal will be achieved.
