Outline of Annual Research Achievements

宇宙航空研究開発機構(宇宙科学研究所)を介してインドネシア航空宇宙庁(LAPAN)との間に技術協力協定を締結し、LAPANを現地側責任組織として、インドネシア科学技術省から研究許可を取得した。一連の手続きに2014年末までの半年以上を費やしたものの、北半球冬季という科学的要請を満たす形で、2015年2月に熱帯西部太平洋域に位置するビアック(1.17°S, 136.06°E)で集中観測を実施することができた。観測期間中に4機の大気球を飛揚し、搭載された各2台のクライオジェニックサンプラーにより計8高度の成層圏大気サンプルを採集した。海上にパラシュート降下・着水したサンプラーは、現地でチャーターしたインドネシア海上警察の高速艇により、全機回収に成功した。採集試料の日本への輸送は、輸送中に年度が替わるのを避けるためジャカルタまでの輸送に留めて保管し、次年度に日本へ輸出することとした。
上記観測期間中には、5機のオゾン・水蒸気・雲粒子ゾンデ、4機の二酸化炭素ゾンデ、2機のエアロゾルサンプラー、1対の加熱・非加熱式光学粒子計数計(Tandem OPC)をゴム気球で飛揚し、一部を除いて概ね良好なデータが得られた。水蒸気ゾンデデータからは、熱帯対流圏界層(TTL)温度変動を水蒸気混合比として記録して熱帯成層圏を上昇する「テープレコーダ信号」を読み取ることができた。さらに、TTL内脱水過程の進行を捉えるため、2波長Mie偏光ライダーを地上で運用したが、TTL内の巻雲は運用開始期に出現したのみで、水蒸気ゾンデ飛揚時には興味ある事例は見出されなかった。
観測機材の到着が次年度になるため、取得データの本格的解析は次年度以降に実施することとした。

Reason

本研究課題で計画していた、クライオジェニックサンプラーによる熱帯域における成層圏大気試料の採集は、予算規模が大きいだけでなく、世界で初めての試みであり、多くの困難が予想された。本課題を申請する前のプロポーザルの段階から、現地LAPANを何度も訪問し、科学的意義や実施に必要な準備などについて説明してきたが、LAPANの協力者にとって初めての経験でもあり、実際に手続きを進めようとすると勝手の違うことが多かったとのことである。事実、インドネシアの法的手続きを全て満たすのに多大の時間を要し、気球の飛揚時間帯の選定、飛揚中の気球の位置通報については、現地入りしてから航空管制当局と直談判して調整するなど、薄氷を踏む経験の連続であった。採集試料の解析は次年度以降へ繰越となったが、こうした多くの困難を克服し、計画した4機の大気球全ての実験を計画の初年度に成功裏に終えることができたことは、順調に進捗していると評価するに十分な成果と考える。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

クライオジェニックサンプラーにより採集された試料を日本へ輸送し、各種大気微量成分の混合比や同位体比を精密に測定する。それらの中から、代表的clock tracerである二酸化炭素と六フッ化硫黄の混合比の鉛直分布から、熱帯成層圏大気の「年齢」の高度分布を求める。また、同じ集中観測期間中に飛揚された水蒸気ゾンデ観測値に基づいて導出される「テープレコーダ信号」から、代表的高度の大気の成層圏流入時期を評価する。Clock tracerの現場観測により求められた熱帯成層圏大気の「年齢」と水蒸気ゾンデ観測に基づく成層圏大気流入履歴の直接比較は初めての試みであり、結果の整合性が研究の一つの焦点となる。亜熱帯混合障壁により中高緯度からある程度は隔離され、鉛直移流が卓越しているはずの熱帯下部成層圏ではあるが、鉛直拡散や、まだ十分に理解されていない効果のために、その結果は見かけ上の矛盾を示す可能性がある。少なくとも、論文発表されている衛星データに基づいて評価された「年齢」と手元の水蒸気「テープレコーダ信号」との予備的比較によれば、観測誤差では説明できない相違が認められる。これらの矛盾を克服し、いかにして整合的理解に到達するかは、今後の主要な課題のひとつである。そのためには、ラグランジュ的アプローチと化学輸送モデルによるシミュレーションが有効と予想される。まずは、研究グループ内で検討を重ね、なるべく早い時期に成果公表へつなげたい。
