Outline of Final Research Achievements

W examined whether a [13C]-naproxen breath test ([13C]-NBT) could serve as the predictor of the gastric mucosal injuries induced by naproxen. We found that [13C]-NBT reflected metabolic profiles and the effect of naproxen on prostaglandin levels and could serve as a predictive marker of naproxen-induced gastric mucosal injury. We next prospectively tested the usefulness of [13C]-NBT for the tailored prophylaxis therapy for naproxen-induced gastric mucosal injuries. We found that [13C]-NBT was useful to select the subjects who were at the high risk of gastric mucosal injury on naproxen and needed the prophylaxis treatment with a PPI.
