Outline of Final Research Achievements

Oral mucosa may regulate stress response against Candida. We focused on Heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) gene induced by Candida albicans (Ca), and investigated the HO-1 expression oral keratinocytes. We found HO-1 expression induced by heat-killed Ca using a cDNA microarray. beta-glucan derived from Ca increased HO-1 expression in oral keratinocytes. beta-glucans promoted induction of intercellular reactive oxygen species and Nrf2 translocation into nuclei. HO-1 induced by beta-glucan may have an important role in host defense against the stress caused by C. albicans.
