本計画では、能登半島先端の大気観測施設において、エアロゾルの連続観測を行い、その季節変化や増加要因を正確に把握し、雲凝結核としての活性化能も含めた粒子の物理化学的特性を明らかにすることを目的としている。
大気中の微量なガスが前駆物質となって粒子化する新粒子生成（NPF）は、最終的に雲凝結核の濃度を決定付け、地球の気候に影響を与える大気エアロゾルの重要な発生プロセスである。本計画期間において得られた長期のエアロゾル粒径分布観測データに基づいて、NPFの発生トレンドを解析した結果、興味深い季節性の存在が明らかになった。東アジア地域における従来のNPFに関する観測研究は数週間から数か月程度の短期集中観測に基づいたものがほとんどであり、本研究のように季節性も含む長期的なトレンドを明らかにした例は少ない。また、従来NPFは光化学反応を介して主に日中に起こる大気現象だと考えられてきたが、長期的な観測から夜間のイベントの存在も確認された。世界的に見ても、夜間にNPFイベントが観測された事例は依然限られているだけでなく、その発生要因として日本海側地域特有の冬季季節風の関与を示唆する興味深いデータも得られており、研究戦略上、能登地域が持つ大気観測拠点としての有用性を改めて再認識する形となった。
これらの成果については15th IGAC (International Global Atmospheric Chemistry) conferenceなど国内外の学会を通じ発表したほか、国際学術誌への投稿に向け準備中である。
