Outline of Final Research Achievements

The main objective of this research is to analyze the problem of one’s employment and unemployment over the life cycle by mainly using a “life-cycle labor search and matching model” which explicitly introduces the age of workers into a standard labor search and matching model. The theoretical analyses yielded new theoretical insights on the optimal wage path when firms and workers engage in long-term employment contracts as well as on the optimal monetary policy in a model in which the credit market is introduced in a search-theoretic fashion. The data analyses of the Japanese labor market microdata enabled us to deepen our understanding of the labor market behaviors of workers by gender and age, which are difficult to observe from the aggregate data.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

上述の長期雇用契約についての研究からは、社会が労働者の厚生の総和の最大化を目指すのか、最も恵まれない労働者の厚生の最大化を目指すのかで最適な賃金の経路が全く異なることが判明した。金融市場についての研究からは、経済におけるショックの性質によって望ましい政策ツールが異なることが分かった。日本の労働市場についての研究では、一口に非正規雇用といっても性別・年齢によってそのあり方が大きく異なることが判明した。本研究によるこれらの発見は、人々のライフサイクルにおける雇用・失業に関わる問題やそれに関連する経済的問題についての、社会的に有意義な新知見と思料される。
