Chronostratigraphy for the Mesoproterozoic strata in Jixian, North China

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

中期原生代は退屈な時代と揶揄されてきたが、近年の微化石の相次ぐ発見によって注目度が増している。この時代は真核生物の出現から動物誕生前の過渡期にあたり、同時代の他地域に比べて化石が比較的多産する北中国蘇県(Jixian)において地質調査を行い、岩石採取と化学分析を通じて古環境解読を目指している。2015年度に申請した地質調査に関する許可証が2016年度も得る事が出来ず、予定していた地質調査を行う事が出来なかった。そのため化学分析や論文執筆に重きをおき、2014、2015年度に行ったジルコンの年代分析に関する結果を、国際雑誌に投稿し受理された。以下では化学分析の結果分かってきた事を報告する。
北中国蘇県にて採取した約16-14億年前の炭酸塩岩のうち、ミクライト質な石灰岩から粉末試料を作成し、酢酸を用いてケイ酸塩を溶かさないよう酸分解した。東京工業大学の質量分析計(ICP-OES, ICP-MS)で溶存元素濃度を測定した後、イオン交換によってSrのみを取り出し、学習院大学の質量分析計(MC-ICP-MS)にてSr同位体比(87Sr/86Sr)を測定した。
Mn/Sr比とRb/Sr比に基づいて判断される比較的未変質な石灰岩の87Sr/86Sr比は0.70460、0.70477という値を示した。この値は中期原生代の値としては最低値に近く、前期原生代や後期原生代の値と比べても低い値で、中期原生代の大陸風化が不活発であったことを意味する。一方で、2015年度に行った砕屑性ジルコンの年代頻度分布から、少なくとも北中国においては大陸地殻を作るような火成活動は不活発であった事が示されている。この結果と併せると、大陸風化の観点からは中期原生代は不活発で”退屈”な時代であり、大陸から供給される栄養塩が少なく生命にとっては不毛な時代であったと言える。
