Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The experimental results obtained in the first year seeded a new stage of design and fabrication of new gated double-graphene-layered (G-DGL) heterostructure devices including multi-plasmonics channel formed by multi-graphene-ribbons. The multi-plasmonic structure of the G-DGL active channel helps increase the coupling between the device and the incoming terahertz (THz) radiation. The graphene ribbons were designed with a spatial period of the order of the plasmon wavelength that is a few orders of magnitude shorter than that of photon radiation having the same frequency. Such a short periodic metal grating serves as an ultra-broadband antenna for coupling the THz radiation and the device. The top and bottom graphene sheets were etched out to produce micrometer-sized ribbon patterns. The device was fabricated as the process similar to the one for the original G-DGL devices. Due to the difficulties of the ribbon patterning process based on the electron-beam lithography and PE-CVD dry etching, the sample preparation was delayed for four months. The experiment for observation of detection of THz radiation was carried out to the fabricated samples. By the end of this program year, no distinctive results were obtained, but hopefully the device potentialities will be validated experimentally as theoretically revealed.
