Research Abstract |
As the results of the 1984-1986 research, the following articles were published : 1. Phonological Characteristics of the Ho-chien-fu ( Hsien-hsien ) Dialect of the late Ch'ing Period 2. Phonological Evolution of the Division II rimes of Ancient Chinese Geng rime-group 3. Historical Study of Phonology of Chinese Mandarin Dialects ( I ) In the first article, on a basis of the dictionary of Ho-chien-fu dialect, which was compiled by L. Wieger, the dialect phonology was investigated. After showing tables of syllables, the author pointed out some characteristics of the dialect, as well as the difference between the Ho-chien-fu dialect and that of Peking. In the second article, the author discussed the question of why and how the division II words of gutturals and laryngals of ancient Chinese Geng rime-group did not cause palatalization(ka>kia) in the Northern dialects. According to his assumption the phonetic evolution a>a in the main vowel prevented them from palatalizing. The third article deals with the phonology oh Nanking Mandarin, which is one of the major mandarin dialects in the Ch'ing period. The material for studying is the book " The Nanking Kuan Hua " by K. Hemeling (1902). The article first shows tables of every syllable of this dialect and then describes a detailed comparison between the Nanking Mandarin and the Ancient Chinese.
