Research Abstract |
Actinomyces species have been considered as a causative agent of both root surface caries and gingivitis. Predominancy of Actinomyces is comparable with that of Streptococci in plaque bacteria. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of fluoride and pH on the glycolytic activity of Actinomyces viscosus in a chemostat as a oral model. The cultivation was run at pH 5.0-8.0 at 37゜C under nitrogen gas flow. The complex medium containing of fluoride ranged 0-500 ppm <F^-> was used. The glycolytic activity of A.viscosus was not effected by fluoride less than 50 ppm <F^-> . However, this activity became low depending on the fluoride concentrations at more than 50 ppm <F^-> . This phenomenon related to the changing pattern of the endproducts in culture medium. These results showed the change of glycolytic pathway of A.viscosus by the addition of fluoride. The change of pH also affected the glycolytic activity and its effect was cooperated with the fluoride concentration. Subsequently, the demineralization of enamel and cementum was researched by A.viscosus in a oral model system. The level of the demineralization of cementum caused by the colonization of A.viscosus was higher than that of enamel. However, the detailed data of this study was not got yet. The colonization and demineralization by A.viscosus require further examination.
