Research Abstract |
The ultimate purpose of the present project is to clarify the diffusion of palaeolothic cultures from the equatorial rift valley and the development of the same cultures in the surrounding areas, special stress being laid on the diffusion and development of the early stone age cultures. In Tanzania we began the excavation of the palaeolithic site of Mgonga, north of the Iringa city in the southern highland, which revealed the white sand in which the artifacts had been expected was largely sterile depth-weathered basement granitoid and suggested that the artifacts found in lactorine white sand at the top of the depth-waethered basement were to belong to late Acheullean. In addition to this excavation, several activities were developed among which here is mentioned one done in the Kondoa district where we found shelter sites beside rock painting would cover up to the middle stone age at selected points. In Kenya we reopened the excavation of the palaeolithic site of Mtongwe near the Mombasa city and the survey at Mabanda ya Gombe, Ngutatu, Mipirani and Tangila. The results obtained in the Kenyan sites arebto be summarized together with information collected through the previous researches of the same sites.
