Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, we developed information technology to revolutionize animal behavioral research from the perspective of information science. Specifically, (i) we have developed the first bio-logging device that is equipped with artificial intelligence to capture video recordings focusing only on important behaviors. (ii) We have developed the first application of the explainable deep learning method to comparative analysis of animal behavior, and new findings were obtained from behavioral data of various animals such as worms, mice, seabirds, and other animals.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

(1) 本成果は動物の新しい生態の解明に役立つだけでなく、野生動物との共存や伝染病を媒介する動物と人間社会との関係の解明などに有効と考えられる。(2) 比較分析は、動物行動分析の最も一般的な方法であり、病気が行動に及ぼす影響や、ある遺伝子をノックアウトした際の行動に及ぼす影響、気候の変動が行動に及ぼす影響など、生物学者が様々な分析に用いている。本研究によりこれらの分析を支援することで、人間や動物に共通する病気の理解や気候変動下での害獣との共生を加速させる可能性がある。
