Outline of Final Research Achievements

We showed that Arabidopsis chloroplasts possess both influx and efflux of K-transport activities in KEA1-KEA6. In addition, the mutant, dpgr (KEA3-G422R), exhibited increased spectifc transport activity, compared with that of the wild type KEA3, consistent with physiological results. We also detected the Na and H exchange transport activity of the cyanobacterial Na/H antiporters, NhaS1-NhaS6. Some of NhaS located in the thylakoid membranes, and played an essential role in photosynthetic function under high light conditions.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

光合成の明反応は葉緑体や藍藻で行われており,両者の長所を生かして詳細な検討をすすめた.チラコイド膜におけるプロトン駆動力の形成に必要なNaやK輸送体を同定して,イオン輸送活性を明らかにした.このことにより,チラコイドの膜電位形成には,H以外のNaやKなどの陽イオンが関与しており,その輸送体の実体の一部が明らかにされた.これらの輸送体が光エネルギーの変換でチラコイド膜に蓄積される電気化学エネルギーの生成と変換に重要な役割を担うことが示された.
