Outline of Final Research Achievements

Cells are the fundamental unit of living things. They detect the stimulation from outside and transfer it to the change of the state of cellular molecules, to create signals. Breakdown of this mechanism causes cancers, metabolism deceases, diabetes mellitus, neurodegenerative disease, and so forth. This project exploits mathematical methods to promote biological study under the collaboration of mathematics and biology, describing the details of complex signal transmissions inside the cells as precise and simple mathematical formulae by mathematical modeling and data science to predict unknown pathways by numerical simulations

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

計測技術の進展により、既存の知見では説明できないような微細な生命動態が定量的に観測されるようになり、生物学におけるデータの分析、モデル化、予測のデジタル化が広く求められている。本研究は数理科学と生命科学が融合した新しい研究領域である「数理腫瘍学」を確立し、その期待に応えたもので、基礎医学に強力で斬新な方法を提供する一方、新しい応用分野を開拓して数学研究を活性化させた。本研究で予測したいくつかの反応経路は実験で確かめられ、その方法の有用性が実証されている。
