| Research Abstract |
This research project was organized by six Japanese and eight Russian historians to compare process of economic development in the last half of 19th century and the early 20th century. Since both countries had a lot of similarities in their initial conditions and process for it in this period, because of their charavter of latecomers for industrialization. On the other hand, two countries had differences in their geographical locations and economic conditions in their pre-industrial situations.
When economic growth started in Russia and Japan, traditional consumer goods production developed mainly in rural areas. Modernized new industries and traditional small production coexisted for rather a long time. Both nations put priority to the construction of social overhead capitals --railroads,
telegraph, and telephone. They also paid much attention to military production.
In industrial development initiatives of state in both countries played an important role and were conspicuous, while private enterprise also played an extremely important role. It was supported by massive investments of foreign capital, which was actively introduced in Russia in the very end of the 19th century with acceptance of the government, and later in Japan.
The agrarian problem which was very important for two countries whose population belonged to 80-90 per cent agricultural. Peasant were major econoic and social force but they permanently migrated to the cities in a in a process of industrialization. Demographic situation in both countries had its peculiarities and at the same time some common features.
Most difficult problems discussed at the workshops were the difference of agrarian problems in both nations. These points were oriented in the history of pre-industrial economic situations in pre-industrial period. Our next problems would be how to approach to 17th or 18th centuries histories of both countries.
