Research Abstract |
To begin with, we arranged data of the history of politics, cultural policy and literature in East Germany in chronological order, classified problems into categories and made a list of necessary literature for each category. Then we inquired of publishing companies in Germany if they had the books in stock, ordered available books from them, and photocopied books available in Japan. Our research and gathering of literature made great progress because TSUMURA, head investigator in 1994, was dispatched to Germany as a research worker abroad by the Ministry of Education. keeping pace with gathering and arrangement of literature each of the investigators did the following : (1) SUGIURA, AZUMA and TSUMURA continued critical investigation of, arrangement of, and report on W.Emmerich's Little History of East German Literature, which we had done for some years. (2) SUGIURA drew up the chronological table of cultural, literary and artistic policy of the United Socialistic Party, subjects and discussion in the writers' conference, and creative works of each writer for or against the epolicy of the Party or arguments in the writers' conference. Moreover he investigated on how the East German literature was estimated in the unified Germany based on many materials of the literary controversy over Christa Wolf's What Remains. (3) AZUMA researched attitude of writers in East Germany focusing on liberalization policy of the United Socialistic Party at the beginning of the seventies, the Biermann Event (forgeiture of his citizenship) in 1976, and the keynote address by Hermann Kant at the 8th Writers' Conference in 1978. (4) TSUMURA investigated literary conditions early in East Germany (1945-53) centering round B.Brecht and this investigation is in its final stage.
