Research Abstract |
(1)Epidemiological study of olfactory and gustatory disorder. (1)10-30% of the patients with olfactory or gustatory disorder were drug-induced disorder. (2)25% of the patients with olfactory-gustatory combined disorder were so-called flavor disorder. Improvement of gustatory disorder is earlier than that of olfactory disorder. (3)Spontaneous recovery of sensorineural olfactory disorder were found 30% in the patients of viral infection and 10% in that of head injury. (4)Etiology of olfactory disorder is most important factor affecting the prognosis. Men, longer period of illness and severe damage are risk factors. Remission and recurrence is common in the patient with rhinitis. Improvement usually begin within 6 months. (5)Gustatory distortion was found 60% of the patients with gustatory disorder, and usually accompanied with elevated threshold. Confusion of salt and acid is common. (2)Morphological study of olfactory epithelium and taste buds. Apoptosis in the olfactory epithelium of guinea pig is proved by TUNEL's method. (3)Evaluation and diagnosis of olfactory and gustatory disorder. (1)MRI imaging was useful for diagnosis of congenital olfactory disorder. (2)The ratio of coincidence of symptom and result of olfactory testing was 60%. Most reliable testing was recognition threshold of T & T olfactometry. (4)Treatment of olfactory and gustatory disorder. (1)Zinc was effective also for olfactory disorder. (2)kanpo-medicine was 20-50% effective in the patients with gustatory disorder, dysgeusia, burning mouth syndrome and dry mouth.
