Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research is solving how social change of present age Germany having influenced the German vocabulary. I took up 14,000 new words from common German newspapers and magazines, and a news site on the Internet. The following things became clear as a result of analyzing these new words. (1) Most new words are nouns, followed by adjectives and verbs. (2) Morphologically, most new words are derivation words or compound words whose stems are words which already exist. The other new words are abbreviations, foreign words, and proper nouns. (3) According as the concept expressed with the stem of a word is fixed to society, there are also many derivation words or compound words which are made from it. By counting te number of the new words for every stem of a word, it turned out that derivation words and compound words which are made from words with high frequency related to politics, economy, and society are occupying the higher rank. (4) The numbers of the new words beginning with "EU" (European Union) and "Internet" occupy the 6th place and the 24th place respectively. It turns out that these two matters have permeated present age society of Germany enough. In addition, new words relevant to the theme which becomes the center of attention in the present age society of Germany are conspicuous, such as "environment and an energy problem", "information and communication", "biotechnology and gene research", "refugees and foreigner problems", "female problems", "political reform", and "mad cow disease". (5) These themes have been the present problems also in Japan and all over the world except "European Union" and "Euro". The wave of globalization has attained to even the vocabulary of the many languages in the world.
