Research Abstract |
This study attempts to clarify the merits and demerits of both simple method of CO_2 molds and the method of lost-wax mold which can faithfully express the touch, and to develop a bronze casting method by the combined use of both of them. 1. Process of molding ・ Process of bronze casting in CO_2 molds and its feature ・ Process of bronze casting in lost-wax molds and its feature 2. Bronze casting by the combined use of CO_2 mold and lost-wax mold 3. Production of relief sculpture (bronze casting) by the combined use of CO_2 mold and lost-wax mold The characteristic feature of bronze casting in relief sculpture by the combined use of CO_2 molds and lost-wax molds is that wax combustion takes only ten minutes with blow pipe, while it takes twelve hours with kiln for burning-out. Compared with complete lost-wax molds, this method is a little inferior in the quality of reproduction of the original touch. In spite of that fact, however, I believe that this method is the most appropriate for the bronze casting practice at teacher training college. In addition, in making molds we can greatly shorten the time by adopting the simple method with CO_2 molds. The problems of having no undercut and piece mold, which are the demerits of CO_2 molds, can be solved by incorporating the process of re-sculpturing wax model. The experience of using various materials is valuable for students who are to be art teachers. I would like to propose introducing bronze casting practice in the field of sculpture instead of unchanged materials of plaster or F R P (Fiber Reinforced Plastics).
