| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study considers the emergence of the concept of “kawaii” in modern Japan, with a special focus on girls’culture as a case study. The girls’magazine, Shojo no Tomo (The Girls’Friend), used the word “kawaii” to positively express lovability and the emotion of wanting to protect something. The same magazine contrasted “kawaii” with “hanayaka (gorgeousness).” In fact, “hanayaka (gorgeousness)” was referenced positively by a competitor magazine, Shojo Sekai (Girls' World). Shojo no Tomo’s approach was to associate the term with being a “bookworm”, thereby excluding it as a suitable aspirational model. Through this phenomenon of exclusion, the concept of “kawaii” was purified as a standard for girls. In this manner,
“kawaii” has a correlation with the model of a “good wife and wise mother”, functioning as a gender norm specific to girls.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
現在、「かわいい」は、日本特有の美意識として、国際的に脚光を浴びている。「かわいい」に関する考察は活発になされつつも、歴史的な考察は未だ十分だとはいえない。「かわいい」文化は戦前に存在しなかったとする見解は、半ば通説と化している。所与の前提のように見なされがちな、少女文化との結びつきも、歴史的な観点から考察する必要性がある。そこで、本研究は、「かわいい」の歴史的形成を、少女文化が形成されゆく戦前の日本を対象に分析した。日本の少女文化が世界中から注目を浴び、「かわいい」が現代日本の美学としてもてはやされる今、近代日本における「かわいい」の生成を明らかにする本研究は、国際的な意義を有すと考える。
