Outline of Final Research Achievements

Waterlogged wood deteriorate in the soil for a long period of time, and if they are dried as they are, they shrink and deform, and their value as cultural properties is impaired. The freeze-drying method is a preservation treatment method that can maintain the shape because the water content of the frozen waterlogged wood is sublimated in a vacuum. However, particularly waterlogged thick wood may have fine cracks on the surface due to over drying, or it may be difficult to remove water in the deep layer.
Therefore, the principal investigators created a microwave heating freeze-drying device equipped with various sensors so that the sample being freeze-dried can be irradiated with microwaves at an appropriate time to promote the removal of water in the deep layer.In this study, we used methods such as sample weight measurement and X-ray CT imaging to put it into practical use so that actual waterlogged wood could be processed.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究ではさまざまな条件で処理実験を行った。深層部に水が残ったまま凍結乾燥処理を終えた試料には、処理後保管中に深層部が乾燥・収縮して空洞が生じたものがあった。また、劣化した試料を必要以上に長時間凍結乾燥処理し、表面が傷ついた試料もあった。
今後このような出土木製品がマイクロ波加熱凍結乾燥によって処理されれば、保存処理によって生じた不具合が減少し、出土木製品をより良い状態で後世に伝えることができる。
