| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
It was suggested that erectile dysfunction (ED) may develop as the dose and frequency of doxorubicin (DOX) increase. In addition, it was also shown that testosterone deficiency with testicular atrophy develops in the DOX group. Testosterone replacement therapy did not improve the erectile function in rats, so it is considered that testosterone decline was not a direct cause of ED caused by DOX administration.
On the other hand, in this study, it was shown that pretreatment with dexrazoxane improves the erectile function in rats.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
これまで抗がん剤による男性性機能への影響に関しては研究が皆無であり、学会報告も存在しないのが現状である。また、現時点ではガイドラインが存在せず、申請者が現在進行している研究が世界で初めて実施されるプロジェクトである。
申請者らのドキソルビシンを用いた研究により、勃起障害およびテストステロン欠乏症の発症の可能性が示唆された。ドキソルビシンは小児がんや血液腫瘍に対して汎用されており、可及的速やかに詳細な解明が必要である。本研究により、抗がん剤治療後の男性性機能に関するガイドライン作成の発端となることが期待される。
