Outline of Final Research Achievements

The parasitic plant Cuscuta campestris exhibits a coiling behavior around the stem of its host and produces haustoria, These haustoria extend searching hyphae to penetrate the host, differentiate into vessels, and establish parasitism by connecting with the host's vessels. The molecular mechanisms that underlie these processes have yet to be fully elucidated. In this study, we discovered the following: (1) the elongation of the searching hyphae occurs via two endoreduplication steps that are stimulated by host-derived ethylene; and (2) the differentiation of searching hyphae into vessels necessitates host vascular bundle-derived factors.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

寄生植物であるアメリカネナシカズラの寄生過程は、異種植物の組織間の様々なレベルでの相互作用を介して制御される発生過程である、今回発見したアメリカネナシカズラと宿主であるシロイヌナズナとの組織や細胞間の相互作用に関わる因子の同定は、植物の発生メカニズムの基本的な問題の解明のため重要なヒントを与える点で発生生物学としての学術的な意義がある。また、これらの相互作用に関する知見は、農業上、極めて有害な植物であるネナシカズラ属の繁殖を管理するうえでの有用な知見となる点で社会的な意義がある。
