Outline of Final Research Achievements

This project examined the mechanisms underlying the formation of human fear memories, especially in the sensory cortices. With 7T-fMRI, we revealed how the early visual cortex interacts with pulvinar in the cortical-layer dependent manner when perceiving fear related stimuli. With 3T-fMRI, we showed the interplay between the auditory cortex and other cortical areas when the participants integrated and consolidated the experimentally induced fear memories. We further developed the research team to target the participants who underwent real-life traumatic events to further investigate the role of sensory cortices in post-traumatic memory dysfunctions.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

自動車事故などのトラウマティックな出来事を経験すると、その出来事を想起して不安を感じやすくなるなど、特徴的な記憶の障害が生じる場合がある。これまで、動物研究の流れに沿って扁桃体を中心とするトラウマ記憶のメカニズムを検証する研究は多く実施されてきたが、一部の研究が皮質感覚野の関与を示唆するものの具体的なメカニズムについてはまだほとんど分かっていない。本研究は皮質感覚野に特に着目してトラウマ記憶形成・定着メカニズムを検証し、トラウマ記憶による障害への示唆を与える成果を上げ、医学的・社会的意義を達成した。
