Research Abstract

Carbon materials prepared by pyrolysis of polyacrylonitrile exhibited ferromagnetic behavior. Chemical analysis combined with TEM-EDX analysis revealed that the carbon material did not contain any transition metals. The metal-free ferromagnetic carbon material exhibited a large saturation magnetization of 1.22 emu/g, enough to be attracted by a permanent magnet.
