| Outline of Research at the Start |
大型海藻や造礁サンゴは生態系基盤を成し、生態学的・社会経済的な価値が高い。しかし日本の温帯域沿岸では、気候変動の影響によって南方からサンゴが分布を拡大する一方で、海藻の藻場が衰退している。これらの変化は日本の沿岸生態系の構造や機能に影響し、地域の社会経済へも影響すると予想される。本研究課題は、海藻、サンゴ、関連する魚類群集の生態学的研究、およびそれらの生物群集の生態系サービスや利用形態に関する社会経済学的研究を組み合わせることによって、将来の気候変動のもとでの最適な生態系管理方法を策定する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
When distributional changes induced by climate change occur in ecologically fundamental groups, they spread to many associated organisms, with ecological and socio-economic consequences. This study attempted to identify future distributional changes and refuge areas under the climate change impacts by conducting field surveys and analyzing the relationship between climate change impacts and species interactions, such as local environment and herbivorous pressure, for brown macroalgae and reef-building corals, which are the main primary producers in coastal ecosystems. Further, we interviewed local coastal fishers including fisheries leaders on changes in coastal use, such as fisheries, associated with changes in the ecologically fundamental groups, and the socio-economic impacts of tropicalization were clarified.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は、生態系の気候変動影響は単純な南北勾配ではなく、地域環境や生物間相互作用と関連したモザイク状のパターンとなることを示した。これは気候変動適応策を講ずる上で、地域的な避難場所の存在や地域単位の対策による生態系保全のポテンシャルを示す意義のある結果である。また社会経済学の現地調査は、このスケールでの研究調査の実施自体が目新しく、地元およびスペインの海外メディアに取り上げられる等の社会的反響があるなど、今後の解析結果への大きな社会的期待が寄せられた。
