Outline of Research at the Start

熊野灘沖に孔内観測として設置された体積歪計が急変したのを機に、体積歪計の機器特性、間隙圧の海洋変動、混濁流の影響を考慮した地殻変動解析を行う。そのために、体積歪計の機器特性に関しては、環境実験装置を整備して海底下の温度圧力条件下での機器特性について定量的な評価および適正なオペレーション条件を絞り込む。間隙圧の海洋変動については、海中天気予報を活用し、水温・塩分の4次元分布に基づいて海洋変動による海底圧力への寄与を定量的に評価する。混濁流については、日米共同研究により、海外の沈み込み帯で開発した手法を南海トラフへ適用することで歪蓄積過程を更に高精度で監視する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

To detect crustal deformation along the Nankai Trough, we have monitored pore pressure connected to seafloor cabled network by using hydraulic pressure gauges in the borehole and on the seafloor. In this study, we succeeded in developing analytical method to extract volumetric strain change due to crustal deformation component from the observed pore pressure in nano-scale.
In addition, we have also developed ocean modeling JCOPE to evaluate the oceanic variation, which suggests that there is significant relationship between the Kuroshio meander and the termination of slow slip events.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

南海トラフにおける体積歪変化をナノスケール(10の-9乗)で捉える手法を開発した。これにより、断層すべりが1cm生じただけでもリアルタイムで検知できるようになった。その結果、熊野灘でこれまで繰り返し発生したスロースリップイベントについて、2020年3月の時には検知まで5日ほど要したが、2023年3月では発生の翌日に検知し、気象庁に報告するまでの時間を大幅に短縮することが出来た。更に、海洋モデルJCOPEによる海洋擾乱の定量評価の機能も実装し、黒潮蛇行などによる誤検知を防ぐ環境も整えた。これらは地震学・地盤工学・海洋物理学・気象学の融合研究による独自の成果として社会貢献を果たすことが出来た。
