| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究は、近世日本の代表的な武士道書『葉隠』に説かれた、奉公人の主君に対する忠誠の内実を再検討することを通じ、近世日本における武士の倫理思想がもつ特質を、明らかにしようとするものである。さらに、他者に対する誠実さとは何か、というより普遍的な問いのもと、最終的には上記の特質を、近松門左衛門の人形浄瑠璃における心中立てや、儒学思想におけるより広汎な他者に対する誠実さなど、同時代の（また武士のみを担い手としない）様々な思想文化にも通じるものとして位置づけていくことを、目指すものである。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research aimed to reveal the ethics of loyalty in "Hagakure" which requested the retainers to die anytime without getting lost and at the same time to fulfill the duties alive for their lord and country. As the result, a critical contradiction is recognized between death and life in "Hagakure", but this contradiction is probably to be find also in the requests by other Japanese ethical thoughts such as Confucianism, as the universal difficulty of faithfulness for irreplaceable others and for one's own self.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
『葉隠』の説く武士道については、その没我的忠誠が背後に有する矛盾や意味を、すでに多くの先行研究が指摘してきた。本研究の成果はこうした知見の蓄積に連なるものだが、この問題を凝縮する局面として、最終的には主君への「諫言」に着目したことにより、「忠誠」の具体的な機微に即しつつその倫理的本質に迫ろうとし得た点で、新たな意義を有している。これを今後、「誠実」とは何かという視点から、同時代の諸思想に対する分析としても開いていくことが出来れば、ひいてはより広く日本社会にとっての倫理を模索する営みにも、資するものと期待される。
