Outline of Research at the Start

サルコペニアは、加齢による骨格筋量や筋力の低下を特徴とする骨格筋委縮症候群である。サルコペニアの罹患は転倒・骨折や寝たきりのリスクを高めるため、健康寿命の延伸や介護予防の観点から極めて重要な疾病である。本研究の目的は、骨格筋細胞および肝細胞を用いたスクリーニング法を組み合わせることで、サルコペニア抑制に有効な食品由来の機能性成分を同定し、その機能を明らかにすることである。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Sarcopenia is an age-related muscle atrophy characterized by a decrease in skeletal muscle mass and muscle strength in the elderly, and is an important disease from the perspective of extending healthy life expectancy and preventing nursing care because it increases the risk of falls, fractures, and bed-riddenness. The objective of this study was to identify food-derived functional ingredients effective in suppressing sarcopenia and to clarify their functions. The food-derived components found to be effective in this study functioned to suppress muscle atrophy by inhibiting the expression of muscle-specific ubiquitin ligase and enhancing phosphorylation of Akt in skeletal muscle cells or by enhancing IGF-1 secretion in the liver.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

現在、我が国のサルコペニアの有病者数は推定370万人に上り、高齢化の進展に伴い有病者が更に急増することが予想される。本研究によってサルコペニアに有効な食品成分を同定することは、我が国の健康寿命延伸への有益な糸口となりうる。高齢者は、複数の慢性疾患を罹患していることや、多数の薬の併用による副作用が問題になっている。本研究によって作用機序の異なる有効成分を複数同定することは、高齢者一人ひとりの体質や症状に適した食事療法や機能性を有する食品を提案するための有益な知見となる。
