近年のアメリカでは、民主党に帰属意識を持つ有権者が共和党支持者を、共和党に帰属意識を持つ有権者が民主党支持者を嫌い、互いに交流を避けようとする、「感情的分極化」と呼ばれる現象が深刻になっている。本研究では、アメリカの有権者が民主党／共和党支持者の社会的な属性や政策争点態度についてステレオタイプを持っていることに着目し、独自のサーベイ実験を行うことで、(A) 政党ステレオタイプが感情的分極化に与える効果及び(B) 政党ステレオタイプを修正する情報が感情的分極化を低減させる効果を実証的に検討する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this research project, which consists of three distinct studies, is to examine the causes of, solutions to, and the consequences of affective polarization among American voters. The first study conducted a survey experiment to show that correcting stereotypes about partisans' social characteristics and issue positions can ameliorate the degree of affective polarization. The second study conducted secondary analyses of existing public opinion survey data to demonstrate the mechanisms by which Democrats and Republicans came to have different social characteristics (called social sorting). The third study used an original survey experiment to show the evidence of expressive survey responding, in which partisan motivations influence the survey responses that respondents give to policy items.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は、アメリカの有権者における感情的分極化の要因、緩和方法、及び帰結に関し、先行研究では十分に明らかにされていなかった点について実証的検討を行なったものである。そのため、本研究で得られた知見は、いずれも政治行動論分野の先行研究に貢献するものである。
また本研究は、アメリカの有権者行動に関してデータの収集及び分析を行うことで、日本の重要なパートナー国であるアメリカの政治や社会についての理解に資するという社会的意義を有する。また、感情的分極化はアメリカ以外の国についても見られる現象であることから、感情的分極化の諸相を実証的に明らかにする本研究は、アメリカという文脈を超えた価値も有する。
