Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Habitual mouth breathing often cause impaired taste sensation. Although habitual mouth breathing is recognized to disturb the orofacial functional development, the relationship between habitual mouth breathing and taste disorders has not been investigated sufficiently. In the present study to clarify the link between habitual mouth breathing and taste disorders, we carried out the clinical survey targeting patients with mouth breathing. To clarify the mechanism for the impairment and recovery of taste sensation corresponding with changes in breathing patterns, animal studies were performed using the rodents with unilateral nasal obstruction. Data suggested that habitual mouth breathing poses a risk for taste deterioration with affecting taste receptors on the tongue.
