研究成果の概要

多様性を誇る六脚類の大部分を構成する外顎類は、強力な咀嚼力を保証する「幕状骨」とよばれる強靭な頭部内骨格を発達させた。幕状骨には単関節丘類（イシノミ目）、双関節丘類無翅類（シミ目）、双関節丘類の有翅昆虫類に至る向上進化的変遷が明瞭に認められるが、六脚類の基部分岐での「初原状態」についての理解は極めて断片的である。本研究は、基部分岐である「内顎類」の頭部内骨格の形成を詳細に検討することにより、カマアシムシ目の頭部内骨格は本目の固有派生形質、コムシ目の頭部内骨格が外顎類の幕状骨の初原状態を示すなどの重要な成果をあげた。あわせて、六脚類の基部分岐、多新翅類の高次系統に関しての議論も発展させた

研究成果の学術的意義や社会的意義

六脚類（広義の昆虫類）は種数において全動物の75％、全生物の60％を占める、最も多様性の高い動物群、生物群である。したがって、動物を理解する上で、また、生物を考えていく上で、六脚類は最も興味深いグループである。ドブジャンスキーが「進化の光に照らさない生物学は何の意味もなさない」と語ったように、生物を理解するためには、生物、個々のグループの進化が正確にフォローされなければならない。動物を理解する上で、また、生物とは何かを語るために、六脚類は最重要のグループであり、私たちは六脚類の進化を正しく把握したい。本研究は、六脚類の系統進化を、頭部内骨格の進化的変遷との視点から、描写したものである。
