本研究の主な成果は下記の4点である。(1)「生きている化石」オウムガイを解剖し、他の頭足類、軟体動物と比較することにより、原始的形質、派生的形質を特定した。(2)オウムガイの胚の解剖から、頭足類のボディープランの起源についての仮説を提唱した。(3)殻の退化した頭足類は化石記録が乏しいが、顎に注目することにより白亜紀に現代型の鞘形類がすでに繁栄していたことを明らかにした。(4)アンモナイト類の胚殻の形態より、繁殖様式、初期生活史を推定し、白亜紀末における絶滅の要因に関する仮説を提唱した。
