研究概要

本研究の目的は、第1に東洋と西洋における言語表現の文化差を実証すること、第2にその文化差を生みだすメカニズムを検討することであった。先行研究においては、東洋人は西洋人に比較し間接的な言語表現を好むことが示されていたが、3つの文化比較調査の結果、従来の知見とは逆に、東洋人である日本人は、西洋人であるアメリカ人よりも直接的表現を使用することが示された。さらに、アメリカ人は自分の社会的ネットワークを拡張する強い動機を持っており、その動機が文化差を媒介することが示された。
