歴史的に多民族が混住する東アフリカ・スワヒリ海岸のキルワ島と マフィア島(タンザニア)、ラム島とパテ島(ケニア)において、民族に応じた沿岸資源の利用 と管理について比較研究した。その結果、いずれの海村においても、波風が穏やかで魚影の濃 いマングローブ内海が居住空間・生業空間として重要であった。主要調査地のキルワ島では、 マングローブ内海ではバントゥ漁師による採集中心漁撈、外海では主にアラブ系漁師によって 刺し網中心漁撈という民族に応じた生業空間と漁獲対象の棲み分けがあった。しかし、2004 年 ごろから始まった環境保護政策によって、マングローブ内海での漁撈活動が制限され、漁具を 没収されたバントゥ系住民は生活困窮に陥った。バントゥ系住民とアラブ系住民の経済格差の 拡大は、文化的経済的にキルワ島社会の構造に変化をもたらした。文化的変化は、邪術の横行 と対抗邪術としての精霊憑依儀礼の復活である。経済的変化は、家計を助けるためにバントゥ 系女性が積極的に経済活動に参加し始めたことと、若者の漁撈離れ観光業嗜好である。環境保 護政策にともなう伝統的な資源利用の変化が、現地の生活に、文化的経済的に与える影響につ いて具体的に解明することができた。
